The Kentia Palm Howea forsteriana is endemic to Lord Howe Island and grows widely on Norfolk Island. It is thought to have been introduced to Norfolk in the late 1800s. The tree became popular during the Victorian era, and has been exported to Europe from both Lord Howe and Norfolk Island ever since.
Kentia Palms are still are exported from Norfolk Island by a select group of local suppliers. They are exported as seeds, and also as small plants once the seeds have sprouted. Here, Arthur Evans is picking seed from a Kentia Palm at Steele’s Point.
