ABOUT THIS IMAGE

Nepean Island is an uninhabited limestone island located about 1km south of Kingston’s Point Hunter. Covering an area of around 25 acres it is a breeding ground for a variety of sea birds throughout the year and is looked after by the Norfolk Island National Park.
This island was reportedly cleared of Norfolk Pines and used as a quarry during the first and second colonial settlements of Norfolk Island in the 18th and 19th centuries, which seems almost unfeasible given that with with high cliffs and surging waters all round the island, it is actually very hard to approach by boat. The sheer weight of timber and stone, and the lack of motorised vessels and other lifting machinery would have made the removal of these resources incredibly complex.
