The remains of a steam powered engine used in the timber industry on Norfolk Island. Hidden off the road near Anson bay lies the steel remnants of a machine used to haul felled timber for many years on Norfolk Island. That timber would have been put to many good uses and built many homes.
One of the main reasons for European settlement on Norfolk Island was to exploit the island’s natural resources which included flax and timber. While neither proved successful as an export, the importance of the Norfolk Pine as a local resource in the island’s history is significant.Norfolk was discovered to be entirely covered with bushland and trees and so clearing, felling, cutting and building commenced immediately, essentially establishing timber as one of the island’s very first ‘industries’, and one which still thrives. Norfolk Pine timber was immediately found to be strong and durable and it has been utilised ever since.
