ABOUT THIS IMAGE
Rocks at Anson Bay, Norfolk Island. Situated on the north west of the island, the bay is the location of Norfolk’s first permanent communication link with the outside world. In 1902 the Pacific Cable Station was established at Anson Bay connecting Norfolk Island with the Pacific Cable which linked Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Today, telecommunications with Norfolk Island are via satellite links and little visible evidence remains of this Pacific connection, other than warnings on the beach to be aware of underground cables that may become exposed as a result of shifting sands in high seas.
