Maheno, Fraser Island

ABOUT THIS IMAGE

The SS Maheno arrived on the shores of Fraser Island in 1935. The Scottish built hulk (W. Denny and Brothers, Dumbarton) was beached on the island during a cyclone and has remained there slowly succumbing to the elements ever since. Its rusting skeleton frame still clings to the island’s east coastline on the shores of the South Pacific Ocean. Fraser Island is a heritage-listed island located off Australia’s Queensland coast. It is the world’s largest sand island stretching 76 miles and covering an area of over 700 square miles.
