The Three Sisters, Blue Mountains

ABOUT THIS IMAGE

As the sun rises, the silhouette of the Blue Mountains’ oldest siblings, The Three Sisters, dominates the skyline. The Three Sisters are a sandstone rock formation created some 200 million years ago, that today watch over the Jamieson Valley below. Australia’s Blue Mountains are named for the blue colour that the rolling green valleys and gorges take on in the daylight hours, which is caused by the scattering of light through particles in the air. The Three Sisters are often photographed in the evening light when they are illuminated by the setting sun, or during the day when the blue colour of the mountains beyond is obvious. For this panoramic shot I decided to wake early and try it a completely different way to give the distinct rock formation a completely different presence and character.
